What Are Skip & Hook Bin Services?

Skip and hook bin services provide an open-top bin, delivered to your site for a set hire period and removed once it's full or your project is finished — unlike scheduled front or rear lift bins, which are collected and emptied on an ongoing basis. Skip bins (roughly 2m³ to 9m³) are the standard choice for driveways, small renovations and clean-outs, while hook bins (roughly 9m³ to 30m³) are larger, hook-lift loaded units built for construction sites, demolition and high-volume industrial waste.

Clean Waste supplies both skip and hook bins across Sydney, with fast delivery, straightforward pricing, and the right size recommended for your job — whether that's a one-off weekend clean-up or an ongoing construction site.

Before You Book

Do You Need a Council Permit?

Where your bin sits determines whether a permit is required — this is the single most common thing people get caught out on.

📌

Bins on private property vs. on the street

If your skip or hook bin sits entirely on your own driveway or private property, no council permit is generally required. If it needs to sit on the road, footpath, nature strip or any public land, most Sydney councils require a Council Works Zone or Skip Bin Permit before delivery. We can help confirm what applies to your address and arrange the permit as part of your booking.

Compliance

What Can & Can't Go in a Skip or Hook Bin

Correct loading avoids rejected pickups, weight surcharges and keeps your site compliant with NSW EPA requirements.

✅ Accepted

  • General household and commercial waste
  • Construction and demolition (C&D) waste — timber, bricks, tiles
  • Green waste — branches, clippings, soil in small amounts
  • Furniture and bulky household items
  • Cardboard and packaging waste
  • Metal offcuts and scrap (check with us for large loads)

❌ Not Accepted

  • Asbestos-containing materials — ever
  • Hazardous chemicals, paints, solvents and oils
  • Gas cylinders, batteries and pressurised containers
  • Tyres, and large amounts of liquid waste
  • Clinical, medical or biological waste
  • E-waste in large volumes (ask about our e-waste service)
Getting the Most Out of Your Bin

Loading Tips & Weight Limits

A well-loaded bin avoids extra trips, weight surcharges and rejected pickups — a few basics make a big difference.

  • Load flat, heaviest items first: Break down bulky items and distribute weight evenly across the base
  • Fill to the line, not over it: Bins loaded above the fill line or rim can't be transported safely and may be rejected
  • Know your weight limit: Each bin size has a maximum weight — heavy materials like soil, bricks or tiles fill the weight limit long before the bin looks full
  • Keep access clear: Leave enough space around the bin for our truck to safely collect it
  • Ask before mixing waste types: Separating general waste from green waste or C&D waste can reduce your total cost

Common Questions

Skip & Hook Bin FAQs

Straight answers to the questions Sydney customers ask most before booking.

What's the difference between a skip bin and a hook bin?

Skip bins (roughly 2m³–9m³) are delivered by chain-lift skip truck and suit driveways, small renovations and clean-ups. Hook bins (roughly 9m³–30m³) are larger, hydraulically loaded units built for construction sites, demolition and high-volume industrial waste.

Do I need a council permit for a skip bin?

If the bin sits entirely on your private property, generally no permit is required. If it needs to be placed on the road, footpath or nature strip, most Sydney councils require a permit before delivery — we can help confirm this and arrange it for you.

What size skip bin do I need?

As a guide, a 2m³ mini skip suits a small garden clean-up, a 4m³–6m³ skip suits a single-room renovation or moderate clean-out, and a 9m³ skip or small hook bin suits a larger renovation or demolition. Tell us your project type and we'll recommend the right size.

What can't go in a skip or hook bin?

Asbestos, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders, batteries, tyres, large volumes of liquid waste, and clinical or medical waste are not accepted in standard skip or hook bins. Speak to us if you have any of these materials — they usually require a separate, specialised disposal process.

How long can I keep a skip or hook bin on-site?

Skip bins are typically hired for a fixed period, usually a few days up to two weeks, with extensions available on request. Hook bins on active construction sites are often exchanged when full, so there's effectively no fixed hire limit as long as the project is ongoing.

How much does a skip or hook bin cost in Sydney?

A 2m³–4m³ skip bin typically costs $300–$450 in Greater Sydney for general waste, while a 6m³–9m³ skip runs $500–$750. Hook bins (9m³–30m³) are quoted per project based on size, waste type and hire duration. Contact us for a free, itemised quote.
